Though it’s plain that the Canadian textile industry as a whole is experiencing its fair share of difficulties, and that jobs in the textile manufacturing sector have been decimated since the lifting of import quotas on Asian products, Québec’s vibrant construction industry has, for its part, experienced stunning growth, with results as spectacular as those of the textile industry are dismal.

Canada’s textile exports were valued at over $2 billion in 2008 with a workforce of over 26,000 people.1 As the competitive advantage of textile sectors in industrialized nations continues to be affected by the global trade environment, the Canadian textile industry adopted a proactive stance by developing a technology roadmap.

The second edition of the Franco-Québec Symposium, which takes place November 24 to 26, 2010, aims to strengthen the bonds between the French competitive clusters and Québec’s niches of excellence. The exchanges that kicked off during Québec City’s 400th birthday celebrations will continue, though now it is Québec’s turn to send its businesspeople and scientists to France for a series of company visits and work meetings.
